Vijayi Bharat Foundation: Proud supporters of athletes from the 300-year-old Siddi Badsha Community

Ahmedabad:

The Siddi Badsha community, with ancestral roots in Africa, continues to thrive in the villages of Jambur and Shirvan. Brought to India nearly 300 years ago by the Portuguese to serve the King of Junagadh. The Siddis earned the title “Siddi Badsha”—Kings of Labour—for their strength and endurance as they assisted the ruler in tracking Asiatic lions, forging a rare bond of coexistence with the predators of Gir forest.

Originally descended from the Bantu tribes of sub-Saharan Africa, the Siddi Badsha community has, for centuries, embraced Indian culture and nationality and is now making huge strides in the world of sports. Further, their primary settlement in Jambur village, about 24 kilometers south of Sasan Gir in Gujarat’s Junagadh district, continues to preserve its heritage while contributing to India’s social and sporting fabric.

Today, the community preserves its distinct identity through traditions such as the energetic Dhamal dance, while contributing to India’s progress in multiple fields. Many Siddis serve in the Indian Army and Navy, and their athletes have brought global recognition with seven international gold medals in judo. Training continues at the Talala Taluka Adivasi Seva Sangh Ashram Shala in Jambur, where 90 boys and girls are coached.

Adding momentum to this legacy, Vijayi Bharat Foundation (VBF) last year conducted a Talent Identification & Development Programme in Jambur, in collaboration with Talala Taluka Adivasi Seva Sangh. The initiative aims to nurture rural sporting talent by providing age-appropriate training, essential equipment, and expert guidance.

International judo medallists Rohit Majgul and Shahin Darjada, both from the Siddi community, are currently training at VBF’s High Performance Centre, further strengthening the community’s presence on the global sporting stage.

With its rich cultural heritage and growing sporting achievements, the Siddi Badsha community stands as a symbol of resilience and potential. VBF, through its institutional support and contribution to infrastructure development, is proud to help the Siddi community unlock its potential towards making greater contributions to India’s cultural and athletic landscape.

Together to help the world better!
